 Would you like to help someone homeless find a comfortable shelter and a hot meal?  By volunteering at the Riverside Access Center you would be able to help homeless individuals and families find the resources their most critical time of need. 

The Riverside Access Center offers a wide variety of services for homeless clients.  Currently, several Volunteer Shifts are available between the hours of 8am – 5pm, Monday through Friday, located in the Riverside Access Center.  The duties of the Access Center Volunteer position include performing a short interview and looking up relevant information on a computer to match the client’s needs.

The assistance from volunteers with administrative tasks in not only for Mission Delivery and Income Development activities, but also for coordination and development of our volunteer force. Man to Man offers a one-on-one visitation program for newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients as well as support through self-help groups. Volunteer are specially trained to visit men during their continuum of prostate cancer treatment. (Additional Program Training is required.)

By bringing together disadvantaged children of Thailand and volunteers from across the world, there is a learning opportunity for both. As both sides discover more about each other, their lives and their cultures and go on to teach their own friends what they learned in this exchange, we hope to create a world of greater understanding and compassion. Our Thailand centre works especially with the hill tribes, the indigenous people who live in the tumultuous borderlands between Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos and as far as China and Vietnam. The hill tribes in northern Thailand face many challenges, and it is part of our mission to arm our children with the skills, attitudes and knowledge that they will need to have equal opportunities in their future like other Thai citizens. The children at our centre are from the Lahu and Akha tribes. Work - IHF needs people with all skills. No matter your experience, whether a student or retired professional, IHF needs you. At the centre, volunteers divide their time between playing with and teaching the children and working on international tasks. The centre host English, computer and math classes, and the children often seek tutoring for their homework, all tasks which volunteers take part in. All directors lead on one or more of our international task teams such as university relations, photography and child watch. To qualify to work at a centre, volunteers must complete eight hours of work on one of the teams, and they continue to participate on the team once at the centre. In the rare case where you lack the ability to complete these hours but possess certain trade skills in agriculture, construction or others needed at one of our centres, you may be exempt from these pre-trip hours. If this is the case, be sure to immediately get in contact with the centre director to discuss your situation and possible alternative tasks. It is important to note that IHF strictly requires its directors to work eight hours a day (four hours at the center and four hours online), six days a week. If this work is not completed, you will be dismissed from your position. As an entirely volunteer-run organization, IHF depends upon its members to contribute to the day-to-day operations, both locally and internationally. Without these daily hours, IHF would cease to function, so directors must be deliberate in their use of time. This is not a vacation. Directors are expected to work hard. Cost: Except for the initial transport to the center, directors are not responsible for any costs. Salary / Pay: Directors must commit to serve at least a year at the center. For the first three months, they are paid a living stipend of USD $120. At the end of this training period, the monthly stipend increases to USD $160. Directors are expected to work eight hours a day, six days a week, and have one long weekend every month. Admittedly, this is little pay for demanding work, but IHF is only looking for those who genuinely want to help children and who seek no financial benefit for themselves. Riverside Life Services strives to help women in crisis pregnancies choose life by offering material aid and support. Many of these women have very little. As an individual or a group, you could throw a baby shower in honor of these women and children served by Riverside Life Services. By collecting diapers, formula, baby food, and gently used or new baby clothes or gear you are helping to empower our large clientele of women to care for their babies.

The hospice volunteer culture is a place where diverse people come together with a common purpose and form a community. Shangrila Hospice is a team of compassionate professionals and volunteers helping patients and their families cope with the challenges of terminal illness. Our volunteers experience a sense of self gratification as they support families through a deeply personal journey. Each volunteer is trained to meet the unique needs of a hospice patient and family, according to his or her own skills, interest and time. The relationship is always mutually rewarding for both the volunteer as well as the families.

Volunteers come in a variety of ages and beliefs...men or women, students or seniors, groups or individuals, clinical or non clinical. Our Veterans are encouraged to volunteer with Veteran patients.

There are a wide variety of ways to get involved, including our "Veterans helping Veterans" program and our "Pedals for Patients" project in which volunteers pick up and  arrange flowers to be placed at the bedside of patients who are on hospice service. We also need helping hands to create comfy (sew-less) blankets for our patients.

Shangrila hospice helps patients and their families cope with the challenges of terminal illness. We consider our work a privilege and volunteering is a special roll here at Shangrila.

We are currently looking for students, age 16 or older, to help with some special projects. Students who are looking to increase their community service hours will find a wide range of volunteer opportunities available to them, including special summer projects. Comfortable bedding is high on the list of the "Top 10 Most Important" things for a terminally ill patient. All materials are provided.

We are looking for ladies to help us make comfy (sew-less) fleece blankets for each of our patients. This project is ongoing and can be done in the comfort of your own home or with a women's group. We also have a "Pedals for Patients" program needing volunteers one morning a week (2 hours) to pick up flowers and arrange them for our patients. (Must live close to our office for this opportunity for logistic reasons).

Starting Over, Inc. assist individuals and families by providing Transitional Housing to people that are homeless in Southern California. Volunteers are needed to interview and screen homeless individuals for entry into our transitional living programs. Volunteers are also needed to answer phones, coordinate with site managers and schedule intakes. Volunteers are needed in many areas to start up this new Recovery Ministry Program: help outreach to Sober Living Homes, prepare &/or lead or assist lessons for small groups, plan & lead social outing such as hikes, basketball games, pot lucks, etc., help in the computer lab with job searching and resume preparation, give counseling, and guidance.

The Visiting Nurse Association, Riverside Hospice, is looking for experienced sewers able to sew a keepsake stuffed Teddy Bear as a remembrance of a lost loved one. These bears are created from an article of clothing, like as pair of pajamas or a shirt. VITAS is looking for kind and caring people to help terminally ill patients and their families. Friendly visits, simple errands, providing a listening ear and the gift of friendship at a critical time can make a real difference in another's life. Yours too!

VITAS volunteer activities include respite care (sit with a patient while the caregiver takes a break); friendly visits to patients and their families at home or in a nursing home. Our patients enjoy being read to, playing cards, board games, listening to music or just a friendly chat. 

You may driving a patient or family member to appointments; accompanying a patient to a church function, wedding, beauty shop; run errands to the grocery store, drug store or post office. We are also in need of Administrative, Quilters, Memory Bear Makers and Telephone volunteers.

Mentors spend as little as 4 hours per month for 1 year with a young person. They do ordinary activities like biking, hiking, sports, baking, sewing, and shopping. But rather than do them alone, they bring a child along and introduce them to fun, new things. It doesn't take anyone special to be a mentor. You don't have to have any special training or education. All it takes is a willingness to spend some time with a young person on a regular basis. Kids in our program are waiting for an adult to come along who wants to give them the time and attention they deserve.
