New at of February 2009 - 2 Volunteers, appointed by the ANNA President-Elect, to monitor state legislative and regulatory activities that could impact nephrology nursing, the ESRD Progam, Care of Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease, Transplantation, and related therapies as well as state issues that affect general nursing practice. Responsible for managing presentation of ANNA's positions related to state legislation and health policy in ANNA publications. Upon request for ANNA President or BOD or Chairperson of the Health Policy Committee may represent ANNA and nephrology nursing on legislative and regulatory matters that effect general nursing practice, nephrology nursing practice and individuals affected by kidney disease, as guided by ANNA's Health Policy Agenda and adopted position statements.

During the year, ANNA will again be collaborating with Amgen to sponsor kidney screenings at several NBC-sponsored Health Fairs. Last year ANNA members took part in kidney screenings held in Boston, MA, Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, and Miami, FL. Public participants were screened for kidney disease, and many were identified with risk factors. ANNA members conducted both the health screening and counseling. ANNA's participation in NBC's Health Fair varies in the cities; however, it can be certain that the following NBC Health Fair Cities are possible choices: Washington, DC, Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, Philadelphia, PA, Los Angeles, CA, Seattle, WA, Miami, FL, Raleigh, NC, Boston, MA, Providence, RI, Columbus, OH, San Jose, CA ANNA needs approximately 10 individuals for every screening event, which covers a Saturday and Sunday. One member will coordinate the volunteers and be the contact person for ANNA and Amgen. Four additional volunteers are needed for each day. RNs will assist participants with the screening process, and advanced practice nurses (nurse practitioners or clinical nurse specialists) will review the results of the screening with each participant. Volunteers will be paid a stipend as well as receive a per diem for meals and reimbursement for parking.

Candidates must provide detailed information regarding financial holdings, employment, research grants and contracts, and other potential conflicts of interest that may preclude membership. The Council provides advice and recommendations to the Director, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and to the Secretary, Department of HHS, on priorities for a national health services research agenda. The NACNR provides the second level of review of grant applications and recommends to the Institute Director which applications should be approved and considered for funding. These recommendations are based not only on considerations of scientific merit, but also on the relevance of the proposed project to the Institute's programs and priorities. The NACNEP advises the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Congress on policy issues related to the Title VIII programs administered by the HRSA Bureau of Health Professions Division of Nursing, including nurse workforce supply, education, and practice improvement. The Council advises the Secretary, the Director, the National Institutes of Health, the Directors, and the NIDDK staff on matters relating to the conduct and support of research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to diabetes mellitus and endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases and nutrition; and kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases. Periodically, ANNA is asked by various private and governmental organizations to nominate members to serve on expert panels. Some of the organizations are the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), National Quality Forum (NQF) and Kidney Care Partners (KCP). This is a stimulating opportunity for ANNA members with excellent leadership and communication skills. Individuals appointed to these panels are frequently national leaders in the nursing and/or nephrology community. The time commitment varies with each individual opportunity.
