The Community Services Commission is responsible for overseeing the City’s recreation and community services programs. The Commission oversees the general use of park facilities and matters relating to the community’s arts and recreational service needs. The Commission provides information and recommendations to the City Council in these areas. Meets the 3rd Monday at 6:30 pm, in the City Hall Council Chambers

Applications to serve on a commission require an additional form which may be obtained at http://cityofsierramadre.com/commissions-boards-committees. Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled; however, it is recommended that applications for appointment for the beginning of the 2014-2015 fiscal year be submitted by Friday, May 23, 2014 to the City Manager’s Office.

Library Trustee

The responsibilities of the Library Board of Trustees include the following: establishing Library policies and programs to ensure that quality programs are provided to the community, recommending an annual budget to the City Council for approval, and ensuring that efficient and effective services are provided at the Library. Meets the 4th Wednesday at 7:00 pm, in the City Hall Council Chambers

Planning Commissioner

The responsibilities of the Planning Commission fall into two broad categories: consideration of current land-use (i.e. applications for General Plan amendments, zone changes, specific plans, conditional use permits, tract maps, variances, and appeals of staff land-use decisions); and advising the City Council on City initiated amendments to the City’s General Plan. Meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday at 7:00 pm, in the City Hall Council Chambers

The Senior Community Commission is responsible for defining the needs, locating and publicizing available resources, coordinating and initiating services and opportunities for the senior population of Sierra Madre.

The volunteer will assist Development Services staff to administer and monitor the City’s Mills Act contracts, which may include sending letters, contacting homeowners, inspecting properties, taking photos, organizing files, and any other tasks as assigned by the Director.

Administrative Intern

Purpose

Under general supervision, performs a variety of support duties for one of the following offices: City Manager and the City Council, Financial Services, Public Works, or Human Resources; assists with preparing agendas, reports and correspondence, assists in maintaining general files; assists with records management systems, provides customer services to a variety of City Hall customers, works on special projects as assigned.

 

Duties

 

  • Responds to requests for service and administrative support from the City Council, City Manager;
  • Performs administrative assignments including typing, data entry, filing, and answering telephones;
  • Compiles information and helps prepare and distribute City Council and other board and commission agendas;
  • Responds to community needs in terms of non-departmental service complaints and inquiries;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Public Relations Intern

Assists in the development, production, and implementation of internal and external communications and events for the City organization.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.

  • Works with one or more departments to formulate strategy as to themes in city information campaigns and recommends outlets for information dissemination;
  • Researches, writes, photographs, prepares graphic design, prints, and distributes city and department information such as brochures, public notices, bill inserts, and display advertisements;
  • Assists with coordinating media relations, writes news releases and articles, assists with radio and television promotions;
  • Assists the Public Information Officer during emergency management situations;
  • May assist with scheduling and coordinating high profile special events and projects;
  • Coordinates the posting of public information programs on the City’s webpage and social media outlets.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Knowledge of or Interest in:

  • Various journalistic styles.
  • Current principles, techniques, and objectives of public information and relations programs.
  • Social media outlets and trends relating to social media.
  • Basic Photoshop and graphic design.

Ability to:

  • Communicate orally with other employees, members of the media, other agencies, and the public by telephone, in a one-to-one, face-to-face setting, and in a group setting in the English language.
  • Produce written documents using Microsoft Office Suite using proper sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Comprehend and make inferences from materials written in the English language.
  • Organize activities involved in a public relations program.
  • Enter data and information into a terminal or personal computer using a keyboard device.
  • Moves objects 20 – 50 pounds short distances (20 feet or less).
  • Work cooperatively with other employees, media representatives, and the public.
