Explorers Assistant

Activity Summary:

We are looking for a dedicated, cheerful and compassionate "Explores Assistant"! We are looking for one male who iscomfortable working with young boys in grades 1 through 6th.

Responsibilities will include preparing each troop meeting, planning activities, serve on the troop committee, oversee troop fundraising, registrations, camping trips, record keeping and help with preparations for Divine Service. The vital role of Explore Assistant will be to help these young ladies develop into fully devoted disciples of Christ as well as functional and productive members of the Corps and society.

The Assistant will help as directed, presumably in a form of training to potentially become the Explore Leader.  Volunteers will help these young boys develop Christian values and healthy Social Skills through arts, crafts, family, culture, health, safety, sports, athletics, the Bible, camping, nature, science and technology.

Volunteers will need to make a minimum 6 month commitment to proved these boys with stability. The volunteer will need to be available for the meetings which take place Tuesday from 4-6pm.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Passion for helping
  • Must support The Salvation Army’s mission
  • Must be able to work well with others
  • Willingness to make a 6 month commitment
  • Must be able to pass a background check

 Policies:

Volunteers will need pass an initial screening process and pass a background check. Once the volunteer has passed, they will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting.

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site.

Clothing must be respectful as you will be representing The Salvation Army. Pants and shirts must cover the waistband. Tank tops, undershirts, halter tops, crop tops, spaghetti straps and strapless tops are not permitted. Shirts with print are not to be offensive. Transparent, tight or form fitting clothes are not permitted. Skirt/dresses must not be worn more than two inches above the knee.

Activity Summary:

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program allows local businesses, groups, organizations, and individuals to buy gifts for children in need throughout Chicago to open on Christmas Day.

We are looking for volunteers who can help us sort toys by age and gender and pack them up to go to local children to open on Christmas day.

Volunteers are needed December 15th-19th.

Red Kettle Bell Ringers (Volunteer)

Activity Summary:

Greet holiday shoppers and help spread the joyful Christmas spirit. 

We are looking for individuals to generously donate their time by ringing bells next the famous red kettles. As a Bell Ringer, you will be a part of the tradition that represents hope and joy to many throughout your community. Whether you're with a friend, family, co-workers or classmates, all are welcome at any of our hundreds of kettle locations. The funds collected help provide food, clothing and emergency assistance to our neighbors all year round.

Red Kettle Campaign begins November 14th and goes until December 24th, 2014.

Shifts are available Monday-Saturday from 9am-8pm. We are ideally looking for an 8 hour shift commitment as it takes a lot of resources to replace the kettles and stations when shifts rotate.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older (younger volunteers are permitted with supervision)
  • Passion for helping our community
  • Must be polite, cheerful and reliable.

 Policies:

We welcome you to sign up for as many shifts and locations as you would like, but we ask that you please uphold your commitment. If you are unable to make a shift. please contact us 24 hours prior to your shift.

Basketball Coach

Activity Summary:

We are looking for a volunteer interested in coaching and assisting our Basketball Program. If you have the love for basketball, experience with coaching, an outgoing personality, and the ability to work successfully with diverse populations then we would love to have your help!

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, helping participants sign in, organizing and leading the practice and helping in any after practice cleaning that may need to take place in the room.

 The schedule is flexible, but we are looking for the volunteer to commit 2-10 hours a week during after school and evening hours.

Fitness Activity Assistant

Activity Summary:

We are looking for a volunteer interested in being an assistant to our Fitness Activity Department. This volunteer will participate and assist in fitness activities. This position can serve as an internship as well. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, helping with set up for basketball, volleyball, track, walking club, games and crafts; call bingo, etc.  The schedule is flexible.

Steel Pans Volunteer Instructor

Activity Summary:

The Volunteer Steel Pans Instructor will work with children and adults, teaching them: 

  • How to play steel pans.
  • Basic music theory and how to read music.
  • Steel Pan rhythms.
  • How to express themselves through music.

Days and Times Needed: Tuesday and Thursday evenings; must arrive by 5pm to set up for class.

As a vital part of daily operations, The Salvation Army runs programs and services that often require the transportation of goods, food, or individuals to various locations throughout the Chicagoland area. As a Corps Van Driver, you will safely operate the vehicles under direct supervision of the Corps Officer.

This position can be flexible, but we are looking for a reliable volunteer to commit to a number of shifts during the holiday season.

Food Pantry Assistant

Activity Summary:

Be a part of serving the community in our food pantry. Join us in welcoming and directing clients to our food pantry. Volunteers will check the client forms, help distribute goods and ensure clients get the correct items. 

 Job Description:

The food pantry assistant will will greet shoppers and explain how the food pantry operates. Duties include, but are not limited to, qualifying shoppers, assist in collecting food, bagging groceries and stocking shelves.

 Qualifications: 

  • 18 years or older
  • Must enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Possess effective communication abilities
  • Friendly personality and smile
  • Must be able to comfortably lift cases of food

Halloween Festival Assitants

Activity Summary:

The Red Shield Center is hosting its annual Halloween Festival for the children of the Englewood Community and we'd love your help to make it as fun and memorable as possible! 


This Halloween Friday, October 31st from 5PM - 7PM we're giving youth a safe and productive place to wear costumes, play games, eat candy and much more. We're looking for volunteers to help us manage this event, which will include supervising the tumbling area, distribution of prizes and candy, as well as assisting with countless games and other activities. We also need one volunteer to be our "Red Shield" Mascot!

Qualifications:

  • 16 years or older
  • Reliable
  • Full of energy

Policies: 

Volunteers will be working with children and must pass a background check prior to volunteering.

Volunteers are asked not to drink or smoke during their volunteer shift.

Off Street parking is available.
