Activity Summary:

Help us manage our most precious resource: Our volunteers! Without the support of those who donate their time and skills, it would not be possible for The Salvation Army to serve so many people in need in our community. 

We are looking for a friendly and professional individual to perform tasks related to volunteer management. Responsibilities include assisting and screening potential volunteers, helping volunteers with the online and paper applications process, recruiting and maintaining volunteers and coordinating the volunteers schedules.

These skills will look great on a future resume!

Office hours are Monday - Friday 9:00am - 12:00pm or 1:00pm - 4:00pm. This position will not need to report daily, but a regular schedule will be created.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Friendly and works well with diverse populations
  • Must be able to pass initial screening process, background check and complete an online training

Policies:

Volunteers will need pass an initial screening process and clear a background check. Once approved, volunteers will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting.

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site.

Clothing must be respectful as you will be representing The Salvation Army. Pants and shirts must cover the waistband. We ask that you refrain from wearing tank tops, undershirts, halter tops, crop tops, spaghetti straps and strapless tops. Shirts with print are not to be offensive. Transparent, tight or form fitting clothes are not permitted. Skirt/dresses must not be worn more than two inches above the knee. Business casual dress would be appreciated for this office position.

Bring your 'A' game along with your athleticism and ability to work well with children and volunteer to be a Basketball Coach at The Salvation Army's East Chicago Corp. The growing basketball program offers youth an opportunity to join a league with after-school and evening practice. This program gives children the opportunity to play organized basketball and learn how to work cooperatively with other children while also having fun and developing talent. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, helping participants sign in, organizing and leading the practice and helping in any after practice cleaning that may need to take place in the room.

The schedule is flexible, but we are looking for the volunteer to commit from September through May for the program to be successful. This position requires 5-10 hours a week during after school and evening hour.

  • Basic basketball competencies required
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Full of energy
  • Has a passion for teaching, coaching and working with children
  • Works well with diverse population

Zumba Instructor

Activity Summary:

Do you love to teach Zumba? Do you have a desire to share your love with those in our community? Then we have just the position for you. We are looking for a volunteer to help lead our Zumba classes.

 Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, helping class participants sign in, creating and leading the classes and helping in any after class cleaning that may need to take place in the room.

A volunteer is needed for approximately 20 hours a week.

Building Maintenance

Facilities Assistant

Activity Summary:

Help us create a clean, safe, and attractive environment for everyone who enters our doors! We need a dedicated and organized individual to perform the tasks that will make our facility a place that everyone can be proud of.

Under the supervision of our Facilities Coordinator the facilities assistant will help keep our location clean and updated so we can continue to provide services to our community.

Job Description:

Responsibilities include keeping sweeping, moping, emptying the trash, and set up for weekly activities. We'll also ask your help in keeping an eye out for bigger beautification projects that might interest a large group of volunteers.

Candidates must be reliable! Our center keeps very busy and we depend on your dedication and hard work.

This position is Monday - Friday from 1pm-4pm. We are willing to fill this position with a couple of volunteers should you only be able to commit to a couple days a week.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Must be able to comfortably lift 50lbs
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process

 Policies:

Due to the population, Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process. Once they have passed, they will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting. (Some Corps require all volunteers to pass a background check, if this does not apply to your Corps, pleas adjust)

Driver

Activity Summary:

As a vital part of daily operations, The Salvation Army runs programs and services that often require the transportation of goods, food, or individuals to various locations throughout the Chicagoland and Northwest IN area. As a Corps Van Driver, you will safely operate the vehicles under direct supervision of the Corps Officer.

This position can be flexible. We need someone to commit to (10) hours a week, Monday through Friday. ADJUST TO YOUR CORPS SCHEDULE!.

Activity Summary:

If you have the calling and interest in working with children, and like working as part of a team, please consider providing your help, leadership and supervision to our Vacation Bible School as a VBS Counselor / Helper. You'll ensure the safety of our children and provide them with great educational and recreational experiences. You'll report to our VBS Director and work in cooperation with other VBS staff.

Applicants must be available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., from August  4th through August 8th.

Educational Programs

ESL Teacher- Adult Classes

Activity Summary:

Work together by helping our community members learn English at our Corps. We are looking for an experienced or ESL certified teacher, who is comfortable working with class sizes as large as 15. Responsibilities will include preparing and teaching one-hour classes that will meet weekly over a period of eight weeks. You will write and administer tests and assignments for each unit of study, record attendance, prepare student progress reports, and assist with the development and review program.

We are looking for 1 or 2 enthusiastic and experienced volunteers to teach our Adult ESL Classes. 

The classes will be offered Monday and Tuesday evening from 6pm-8pm. We will also offer a morning class from 9-11am. We can be more flexible with the morning shifts based on the availability of the volunteer. 

We are looking for the volunteers to be able to teach through the entire program for the classes to run smoothly. Classes will run from September through May.

 Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Prior experience or certification in teaching preferably ESL
  • Must have a passion for helping
  • Must be able to work well with others
  • Must be able to pass a background check

 Policies:

Food Pantry Assistant

Activity Summary:

Be a part of serving the community in our food pantry. Join us in welcoming and directing clients to our food pantry. Volunteers will check the client forms, help distribute goods and ensure clients get the correct items. 

 Job Description:

The food pantry assistant will will greet shoppers and explain how the food pantry operates. Duties include, but are not limited to, qualifying shoppers, assist in collecting food, bagging groceries and stocking shelves.

Our Food Pantry hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The volunteer's schedule can be flexible depending on the volunteer’s availability. 

 Qualifications:

  • Must enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Possess effective communication abilities
  • Friendly personality and smile
  • Must be able to comfortably lift cases of food (30+lbs)

Volunteer Bell Ringers

Activity Summary:

Greet holiday shoppers and help spread the joyful Christmas spirit. 

We are looking for individuals to donate their time by ringing bells next to our famous red kettles. As a Bell Ringer, you will be a part of the tradition that represents hope and joy to many throughout our community. Whether you're with a friend, family, co-workers or classmates, all are welcome at any of our hundreds of kettle locations. The funds collected help provide food, clothing and emergency assistance to our neighbors all year round.

Volunteers are needed Mid November until Christmas Eve. 

Qualifications:

  • 16 years or older (younger volunteers are permitted with supervision)
  • Passion for helping our community
  • Must be polite, cheerful and reliable.

Policies:

We welcome you to sign up for as many shifts and locations as you would like, but we ask that you please uphold your commitment. If you are unable to make a shift 24 hour notice is appreciated.
