Job Description:

Responsibilities include inputing data from hard copies into our online system. . Job must be performed at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center. 

Schedule: Anytime: Monday thru Friday 8am – 4pm
Time Frame: Until Project is Complete 
Physical Demands / Work Environment: This position requires long periods of sitting and typing. The work environment for this position has a minimal noise level.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Able to work independently
  • Ability to manage confidential client information
  • Possess computer literacy and typing skills
  • Behavior consistent with The Salvation Army Mission Statement 
  • Pass background check

Policies:

Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process.

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site.

Pants and shirts must cover the waistband. Shirts with print are not to be offensive. Shoes are to be closed toe. We don’t want any injuries done to the toes. Flip flops, shorts, tank tops, undershirts, or halter tops, sleeveless shirts, crop tops, spaghetti straps and strapless tops are not permitted. Transparent, tight or form fitting clothes are not permitted. Skirt/dresses must not be worn more than two inches above the knee.

Driver

Activity Summary:

As a vital part of daily operations, The Salvation Army runs programs and services that often require the transportation of goods, food, or individuals to various locations throughout Des Plaines and the surrounding area. As a Corps Van Driver, you will safely operate the vehicles under direct supervision of the Corps Officer. Our need for reliable drivers will increase during our Red Kettle Campaign (November 15th-December 24th).

 

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Ability to lift 20lbs
  • Passion for helping
  • Experience and comfort in driving large vans
  • High energy, poised demeanor and friendly disposition
  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations
  • Reliable, organized and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process and MVR screening process

 Policies:

Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process, since at times they may be driving children. Once passed, volunteers will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days.

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site. We kindly ask that you refrain from drinking 24 hours prior to your shift.

Clothing must be respectful as you will be representing The Salvation Army.

Volunteer Coordinator

Activity Summary:

Help us manage our most precious resource: Our volunteers! Without the support of those who donate their time and skills, it would not be possible for The Salvation Army to serve so many people in need in our community. 

We are looking for a friendly and professional individual to perform tasks related to volunteer management. Responsibilities include assisting and screening potential volunteers, helping volunteers with the online and paper applications process, recruiting and maintaining volunteers and coordinating the volunteers schedules.

These skills will look great on a future resume!

Office hours are Monday - Friday 9:00am - 12:00pm or 1:00pm - 5:00pm. This position will not need to report daily, but a regular schedule will be created.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Friendly and works well with diverse populations
  • Must be able to pass initial screening process, background check and complete an online training

Policies:

Volunteers will need pass an initial screening process and clear a background check. Once approved, volunteers will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting.

Donut Day Tagger

Activity Summary:

The Salvation Army raises funds on Chicagoland's busy street corners. The two-day event is called "Donut Day," in remembrance of World War I, when The Salvation Army distributed hearty donuts and coffee to the exhausted soldiers in the trenches of the battlefields. Funds raised during "Donut Day" support The Salvation Army's many social service programs. 

We're looking for positive, upbeat, and engaging people who understand the ministry of the Salvation Army. You must be honest and able to work well with others. You must be able to stand for hours at a time.

Volunteers will be needed May 31rst through June 8th. 

Qualifications:

  • 16 years or older
  • Reliable, professional and friendly

Activity Summary:

Be a part of our “Breakfast with Babies” program. Expecting mothers and mothers with children of 1 year or younger are invited to enjoy breakfast and the opportunity to “shop” for needed items. These items include diapers, wipes, clothes and toys for their child.

Breakfast with Babies takes place on the 2nd Saturday of every month. Volunteers shifts are occur between 7/730am until 10/11 am.

 Job Description:

Volunteers are needed as hosts, assistants, food preparers and servers.

 Qualifications:

Food Pantry Assistant

Activity Summary:

Be a part of serving the community in our food pantry. Join us in welcoming and shopping with our clients. Volunteers will check the client forms and help distribute goods ensuring clients get the correct items. 

Food Pantry hours are Thursday's from 9-3pm. Willingness to volunteer for all or part of the shift is appreciated!

 Job Description:

The food pantry assistant will will greet shoppers and explain how the food pantry operates. Duties include, but are not limited to, qualifying shoppers, assist in collecting food, bagging groceries and stocking shelves.

Our Food Pantry hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. 

 Qualifications: 

  • 18 years or older
  • Must enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Possess effective communication abilities
  • Reliable, professional and friendly
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus

Activity Summary:

Be a part of the team helping those in our communities find the jobs they need. Our Jobs Program is looking for support staff.

This opportunity is available Monday-Friday from 8:15-4:15. Schedule can be flexible, but a regular commitment will be needed.

Volunteers will assist in a variety of ways based on needs and skill set. Duties may include calling clients, data entry and other tasks as needed.

Nursery Assistants

We are looking for volunteers to help in our nursery during programs and Sunday Services.

Sunday Service 

Volunteers will be needed from 9:30-12pm to watch over and care for children ages 3 and younger.

Programs

We also host English as a Second Language classes Monday and Wednesdays from 9am-11am and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm-8pm. Volunteers will assist in watching the children and interacting with them in age appropriate activities.
