Course Workers are Needed for Course Preparation and Take Down - Feb 24 - Feb 26, 2012

Install Nets: Course workers place ‘B’ Nets where particular hazards exist. These are short lengths of netting strung on plastic poles.

Moving Snow – if it snows on a prepared track, course workers remove the fresh snow by shovelling and by side-slipping or side-slipping on skis.   Recovering from an overnight snowfall can be a major undertaking.  All the new snow has to be removed quickly, before it softens the hard track underneath.

Start Area – course workers erect the start gate and install fencing to set up the start area.

Finish Area – course workers erect and maintain special safety fencing to create a finish corral, or stopping area for racers after they cross the finish line. These course workers need not be skiers.

Running Equipment – course workers deliver nets, poles, shovels, rakes and other equipment to crews working on the course.  Runners need to be strong skiers.

Course Setter Support – course workers carry poles and cloth panels for the course setter as he works his way down the track, setting gates.

Course maintenance – during races, course crew maintain the track by shovelling and raking ruts and by repairing nets that may be challenged by wayward racers.  Requires quick action and deft movement.

Gate Judges and Course Workers - Feb 24, 25, 26 2012

Gate Judges are race officials who play a key role on race day.

The function of the Gate Judge is critical to the successful staging of an SBX race.  In their official position Gate Judges ensure the correct or safe passage of the SBX racer as they travel down the mountain through the race course.  Gate Judges, depending on the event,  may manage as few as one gate or as many as two or three.

Gate judges also let starters and finish know if the race course is ready after crashes and are responsible for letting the hill crew know if the race course needs to be raked or fixed.

Hand Timers - SBX Race

What's Involved?

At both the start and finish line we have 2 hand timers  who record the time of day of the departure and arrival of each racer, from which we can calculate a race time.  They may be operating simple stopwatches and calling times to the Chief of Timing.

A chat with almost anyone in timing will give you the impression that this is the most fun you can have short of being in the race.  You are close to the action, always aware of who is winning, and in communication with other team members all the way down the track.  You do have to be attentive – as we are not allowed to make mistakes.
