General Volunteer Opportunities


  • Adopt-a-Shelf

    Adopt your very own library shelf! Come in on your own schedule to keep shelves clean and return library materials to the correct location within the collection.

  • Book Buddies

    Help make SCPL more accessible by delivering books and other materials to home-bound patrons.

  • Library Service Reserve

    Be contacted when the Library needs volunteers for one-time events, special projects, or to fill in for other volunteers who will be missing a shift.

  • Literacy Programs

    Tales for Tails Assistant- Help facilitate the T2T program at your local Branch by preparing the program site and acting as an ambassador of the program to participants and other library patrons.

    Story Time Assistant- Help with the set up, sign in, and cleanup for preschool or toddler story times

  • Maintenance Support

    Assist Library staff by watering plants, cleaning furnishings, or maintaining outdoor planters and landscaping.

  • Programs Dept. Support

    Assist Programs staff in craft preparation and office support.

  • Spanish Translator Team

    Help make SCPL an even better resource for Spanish speakers. Meet once a month to work as part of a team of college students helping to translate library materials from English to Spanish.

  • Special Events

    Assist with one day events such as Branch Clean-ups, Battle of the Bands, Festival of the Book, etc.

  • Special Projects

    Support administrative, programming, or collections team with ongoing projects.

  • Technical Services

    Work with librarians and IT staff in maintaining collections and technology within the library as a Computer Coach or Tech Ambassador.

  • Youth Programs Assistance

    Assist library staff with youth programs like Homework Help, Lego Simple Machines, Family Crafts, or Toddler Time by watching the door, interacting with participating children and families, setting up the space, and helping to clean up.

Statement of Purpose

  • To enrich the relationship between the Santa Cruz Public Library and the community

♦ Your Steps to Becoming a Library Volunteer:
  1. Complete the online application. A Volunteer Office staff member will contact you with opportunities that fit best with your preferences and qualifications.
  2. Schedule and complete a short interview with Volunteer Office staff.
  3. Read and sign required paperwork. All volunteers are required to sign a release of liability, confidentiality agreement, and agreement of service (some opportunities require additional paperwork).
  4. Meet with the Person in Charge (or designated supervisor) at the branch.
  5. Receive site-specific orientation and training as needed.
++All SCPL volunteers must be 14 years of age or older (with the exception of ACT members)++
**Most volunteer opportunities require a minimum commitment of 4 months**
