Activity Summary:

We are looking for an experienced teacher or tutor to volunteer as our After School Program Teacher. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working with up to 15 children. Responsibilities will include assisting children with their homework and other subject areas throughout the school year.

The after school program will run from Monday - Thursday 2:30P.M. - 5:30 P.M.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Prior experience or certification in teaching preferred
  • Must have a passion for helping
  • Must be able to work well with others
  • Must be able to pass a background check

 Policies:

Due to the population, Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process. Once they have passed, they will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting.

Angel Tree

Angel Tree Assistant

Activity Summary:

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program allows local businesses, groups, organizations, and individuals to buy gifts for children in need throughout Chicago to open on Christmas Day.

As the Angel Tree Assistant, you will be responsible for helping during the initial intake process, work with local donors to coordinate pick-up and drop-off of tags, as well as assisting in sorting the donated toys before distribution. 

The Angel Tree Assistant should be an organized individual who can respond to deadlines, work well with community members and have the spirit of Christmas to share with those in need.

Our office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 to 5:00 The volunteer will need to be available to work 15 hours during office hours.

  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations
  • Reliable, professional and hard working

Toy Shop Assistant

Activity Summary:

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program is a very large and significant part of our Christmas giving. It is a thriving program where The Salvation Army works alongside individuals, churches, schools, and corporations to provide toys to Chicago area children to open on Christmas Day.

The Angel Tree Program preparations and distribution typically runs from December 5 - 20. As a part of the Angel Tree Program, we need to arrange special toy shops where we organize donated toys, as well as work closely with the community. As a Toy Shop Assistant, you will assist in this process.

 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills- especially with diverse populations
  • Culture awareness and sensitivity
  • Cheerful attitude in the face of difficult life situations
  • Bilingual preferred, but not required

Community Center Positions

Beautification and Maintenance Landscaper

Activity Summary:

Help keep our grounds and gardens green and healthy! We are seeking an experienced beautification and maintenance landscaper, who will be responsible for the weekly management of the grounds. Your skills must include lawn care (cutting and trimming) and edging. You'll also plant flowers, and water everything as needed.

You service will help keep our location clean and updated so we can continue to provide services to our community in a welcoming and beautiful facility.

We'll also ask your help in keeping an eye out for bigger beautification projects that might interest a large group of volunteers.

A volunteer is needed for approximately 20 hours a week. Volunteer hours can be completed Monday-Friday from 10:00 A to 2:00 P.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Must be able to comfortably lift 50lbs
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process

 Policies:

Due to the population, Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process. Once they have passed, they will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting. (Some Corps require all volunteers to pass a background check, if this does not apply to your Corps, please adjust)

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site.

Clothing must be respectful as you will be representing The Salvation Army. Pants and shirts must cover the waistband. Tank tops, undershirts, halter tops, crop tops, spaghetti straps and strapless tops are not permitted. Shirts with print are not to be offensive. Transparent, tight or form fitting clothes are not permitted. Skirt/dresses must not be worn more than two inches above the knee.

Front Office Assistant

Activity Summary:

Help us create a welcoming environment at our Corps. We are looking for a friendly and professional individual to perform office tasks that allows us to facilitate our corps programs.

Job Description:

Responsibilities include answering our multi-phone line system, assisting those that enter our facility, screening potential social service applicants, helping interested volunteers with applications and other office duties as assigned.

Kettle Campaign

Driver

Activity Summary:

As a vital part of daily operations, The Salvation Army runs seasonal kettle programs in which bell ringers and supplies must be delivered to kettle locations two to three times a day.  As a Corps Van Driver, you will safely operate the vehicles under direct supervision of the Corps Officer.

This position can be flexible. We need someone to commit to 10 hours a week, Monday through Saturday.

  • Experience and comfort in driving throughout the city
  • High energy, poised demeanor and friendly disposition
  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations
  • Reliable, organized and hard working

Volunteer Bell Ringer

Activity Summary:

Greet holiday shoppers and help spread the joyful Christmas spirit. 

We are looking for individuals to donate their time by ringing bells next to our famous red kettles. As a Bell Ringer, you will be a part of the tradition that represents hope and joy to many throughout our community. Whether you're with a friend, family, co-workers or classmates, all are welcome at any of our hundreds of kettle locations. The funds collected help provide food, clothing and emergency assistance to our neighbors all year round.

Volunteers are needed Mid November until Christmas Eve. 

Qualifications:

  • 16 years or older (younger volunteers are permitted with supervision)
  • Passion for helping our community
  • Must be polite, cheerful and reliable.

 Policies:

Activity Summary:
