After School Program Assistant

Activity Summary:

If you have experience and interest in working with children, and like working as part of a team, please consider providing leadership and supervision to our After School Youth as a Program Assistant. You'll ensure the safety of our children and provide them with great educational and recreational experiences. You'll report to our After School Coordinator and work in cooperation with other After School staff.

Our After School program runs Monday-Thursday 3:00pm-6:00pm and Friday 3:00pm-8:00pm.

 Qualifications:

  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations
  • Reliable, organized and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process

 

Policies:

Due to the population, Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process. Once they have passed, they will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting.

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site.

Clothing must be respectful as you will be representing The Salvation Army.

Food pantry

Food Pantry Assistant

Activity Summary:

Be a part of serving the community in our food pantry. Join us in welcoming and directing clients to our food pantry. Volunteers will check the client forms, help distribute goods and ensure clients get the correct items. 

 Job Description:

The food pantry assistant will will greet shoppers and explain how the food pantry operates. Duties include, but are not limited to, qualifying shoppers, assist in collecting food, bagging groceries and stocking shelves.

Our Food Pantry hours areFridays from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.

 Qualifications: 

  • 18 years or older
  • Must enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Possess effective communication abilities
  • Friendly personality and smile
  • Must be able to comfortably lift cases of food (30+lbs)
  • Reliable, professional and friendly
  • Pass initial screening process
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus

Policies:

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer sites 

Pants and shirts must cover the waistband. Shirts with print are not to be offensive. Shoes are to be closed toe. We don’t want any injuries done to the toes. Flip flops, shorts, tank tops, undershirts, or halter tops, sleeveless shirts, crop tops, spaghetti straps and strapless tops are not permitted. Transparent, tight or form fitting clothes are not permitted. Skirts/dresses must not be worn more than two inches above the knee.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Packager

Activity Summary:

As a Holiday Food Packager, you will be responsible for helping to pack Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes before distribution. 

Our office hours are Monday-Friday from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations

Angel Tree Assistant

Activity Summary:

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program allows local businesses, groups, organizations, and individuals to buy gifts for children in need throughout Chicago to open on Christmas Day.

As the Angel Tree Assistant, you will be responsible for helping during the initial intake process, work with local donors to coordinate pick-up and drop-off of tags, as well as assisting in sorting the donated toys before distribution. 

The Angel Tree Assistant should be an organized individual who can respond to deadlines, work well with community members and have the spirit of Christmas to share with those in need.

Our office hours are Monday-Friday from 9am - 5pm. 

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • High energy level and a joyful demeanor
  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process

Activity Summary:

Volunteer Bell Ringers

Activity Summary:

Greet holiday shoppers and help spread the joyful Christmas spirit. 

We are looking for individuals to donate their time by ringing bells next to our famous red kettles. As a Bell Ringer, you will be a part of the tradition that represents hope and joy to many throughout our community. Whether you're with a friend, family, co-workers or classmates, all are welcome at any of our hundreds of kettle locations. The funds collected help provide food, clothing and emergency assistance to our neighbors all year round.

Volunteers are needed Mid November until Christmas Eve. 

Qualifications:

  • 16 years or older (younger volunteers are permitted with supervision)
  • Passion for helping our community
  • Must be polite, cheerful and reliable.

 Policies:

We welcome you to sign up for as many shifts and locations as you would like, but we ask that you please uphold your commitment. If you are unable to make a shift 24 hour notice is appreciated. 

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted during volunteer hours.
