Child Care Center

The Salvation Army Child Care Center provides a loving, nurturing and educational environment for infants and toddlers ages 6 weeks to 6 years old. Because children need a stable environment and mentors they can count on, we will ask that anyone volunteering for this position would make a 6 month commitment of at least 8 hours per week. The Classroom Assistant works closely with the teacher to aid in lessons, crafts, snacks, clean-up and other tasks as assigned.

Classroom Reader

The Salvation Army Child Care Center provides a loving, nurturing and educational environment for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years old. Classrooms are divided by age. The Classroom Reader will assist the teacher during reading hour. This volunteer will select age-appropriate reading material with the approval of the teacher.

Nap Watch Caregiver

The Child Care Center staff needs the assistance of a volunteer during nap time hours (1-2:30) on the first Wednesday of every month. The Nap Watch Caregiver will monitor and check on the children during nap time, provide any care a child needs if woken, and provide a general presence.

The Salvation Army Family Services Department has a Family Shelter that is located at 417 N. E. Adams in Peoria, Illinois. Bed Bath and Beyond donates items that are delivered to the Family Food Center Warehouse at said address.

The Bed Bath and Beyond Organizer is responsible for sorting through the items, organizing them, and placing them in the appropriate storage area in the Family Shelter building. Said items are then passed on to clients who are re-building their lives and need to furnish their living quarters with furniture, kitchen and bathroom appliances, linen, etc.

Age minimum is 18 years old.

Drop In Center - Food Server

The Salvation Army Family serves the community on Saturday and Sunday for lunch and dinner. This is an opportunity for groups to serve lunch or dinner to the community. We have a prepared sack lunch to serve or groups may purchase food to bring with them already prepared to serve to our guests.

The Drop In Center Site Monitor Assistant is responsible for assisting with monitoring the safety of consumers who participate in the day drop-in center program.  The Site Monitor Assistant works with the Drop-In Center Case Managers providing assistance with the intake process and monitoring the drop-in center.  Training must be completed.

Food Pantry Intake Receptionist

Volunteer is the first contact with the public. Duties include: greeting guests and answering the telephone; transferring calls to the proper persons; signing clients in and having them fill out intake applications & other required forms; and assisting food pantry clients with food orders. Schedules are flexible and will be determined upon interview with potential volunteer and Family Services director.

Intake Receptionist-Veterans Outreach Center

The Veterans Outreach Center (VOC) intake worker will sit at the reception desk located at 416 NE Jefferson here in Peoria.  Their duties will include offering a warm welcome to the veterans who enter the building and have clients fill out Salvation Army intake applications.  Also answering the phone and direct calls to Veteran's Outreach Coordinator. 

All new volunteers must fill out the proper paperwork and have a background check and Safe from Harm training.

Safety Net Monitor

Individual must have High School Diploma or GED equivalent; some college preferred, or at least 5 years of experience working win a position dealing with the security of people.

The Safety Net Monitor is responsible for the direct care of clients who use Safety Net services.  These services include providing a safe place for the clients to sleep and eat meals.  Hours are 7pm until 11pm, 11pm until 3am and 3am until 7am.

Volunteer will have application processed by Volunteer Coordinator then an interview with Safety Net Program Coordinator before background check is pursued.  

Individual must have the ability to work with homeless individuals in a professional, confident and assertive manner.  Knowledge of chemical dependency is a valuable resource.  Individual must have the ability to relate to individuals in a warm, understanding, and empathic nature without prejudice to the demographics of the homeless population.  Individual must demonstrate honesty and integrity while working independently without direct supervision. Individual must be able to pass background check.  Individual must be willing to become familiar and supportive of The Salvation Army mission and purpose of operation.

Safety Net Monitor Assistant

The ideal candidate will have a sensitivity to and appreciation for the condition of the homeless. The volunteer is responsible for welcoming and greeting clients who come to stay at Safety Net, an overnight emergency shelter for homeless men, located at 414 N.E. Jefferson, Peoria, IL 61603. The volunteer helps the staff by completing necessary paperwork, feeding the clients, distributing linen and blankets, answering the phone, following all confidentiality procedures, and insuring the safety and security of everyone. The hours of operation are from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. seven days a week and 365 days per year.

Mandatory background check and Safe from Harm training.  An additional 20 hours of training will be required.  Age 21 or older.

Each community service volunteer will be given a variety of duties daily upon arriving at The Salvation Army. With such a wide variety of programs, each day could require different preparation work. Internships

Accounting/Finance Intern

This is a semester long internship, with the possibility of renewal upon completion of each semester. 

Candidate Requirements:  Be at least a Sophomore, have at least a 2.0 and be in otherwise good standing with their college or university.  Be an Accountant or closely related major.  Have completed at least six credit hours of accounting classes.  Be available to work a minimum of 10 hours a week. 

Candidates are encouraged to register their internship with their college or university to receive class credit hours.

Accounting/Finance Intern will be primarily responsible for assisting in finance reporting, paying invoices, receiving deposits, and managing public funds.

Volunteer will convert paper files into digital information using the Pledgemaker data system.
