Did you know a $33 donation can feed a family of four for an entire week? Friends of The Salvation Army often donate basic needs food items to help feed the hungry in their community. These food items are sorted and packaged at our Chicago Lawn Corps before distributing them to people in our community. 

We need your help to sort and package these food items before distribution. With your support, we can continue to feed the hungry throughout your community! This job consists of packing canned good into bags to be distributed. 

Volunteer hours for this specific job can be completed Monday or Tuesday from 9:00 AM to Noon. 

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Must be able to comfortably lift 30lbs
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process

Policies:

Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process.

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site.

Clothing must be respectful as you will be representing The Salvation Army. Pants and shirts must cover the waistband. Tank tops, undershirts, halter tops, crop tops, spaghetti straps and strapless tops are not permitted. Shirts with print are not to be offensive. Transparent, tight or form fitting clothes are not permitted. Skirt/dresses must not be worn more than two inches above the knee. As a Food Box Packer, you will need to wear comfortable shoes in our moderately cool warehouse, and be able to stand for up to four hours at a time.

Volunteer hours can be completed every Tuesday from 12:30-3:30 PM

Food Mobile Helper

Activity Summary:

The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) Program has partnered with the Salvation Army to help people in our community. Once a month, a food truck from the depository arrives at the Chicago Lawn Corps. We need your help to make sure the distribution of food runs smoothly! 

You would have to bag food quickly, give the food to the clients, and help us clean afterwards. With your support, we can continue to feed people throughout your community!

Volunteer hours can be completed on the FOURTH THURSDAY of every month from 2:00-6:00 PM. 

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Must be able to comfortably lift 30lbs
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process

Policies:

 

Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process.

Activity Summary:

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program allows local businesses, groups, organizations, and individuals to buy gifts for children in need throughout Chicago to open on Christmas Day.

We are looking for volunteers who can help us sort toys by age and gender and pack them up to go to local children to open on Christmas day.

Volunteers are needed December 15th-19th.

Volunteer Bell Ringers

Activity Summary:

Greet holiday shoppers and help spread the joyful Christmas spirit. 

We are looking for individuals to donate their time by ringing bells next to our famous red kettles. As a Bell Ringer, you will be a part of the tradition that represents hope and joy to many throughout our community. Whether you're with a friend, family, co-workers or classmates, all are welcome at any of our hundreds of kettle locations. The funds collected help provide food, clothing and emergency assistance to our neighbors all year round.

Volunteers are needed Mid November until Christmas Eve. 

Qualifications:

  • 16 years or older (younger volunteers are permitted with supervision)
  • Passion for helping our community
  • Must be polite, cheerful and reliable.

Policies:

We welcome you to sign up for as many shifts and locations as you would like, but we ask that you please uphold your commitment. If you are unable to make a shift 24 hour notice is appreciated.

Facilities Assistant

Activity Summary:

Help us create a clean, safe, and attractive environment for everyone who enters our doors! We need a dedicated and organized individual to perform the tasks that will make our facility a place that everyone can be proud of.

Under the supervision of our Facilities Coordinator the facilities assistant will help keep our location clean and updated so we can continue to provide services to our community.

Job Description:

Responsibilities include floor maintenance, vacuuming the Chapel, emptying the trash, and possible event setup. We'll also ask your help in keeping an eye out for bigger beautification projects that might interest a large group of volunteers.

A volunteer is needed for approximately 15 hours a week. Volunteer hours can be completed Monday-Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 but only for three hours a day. 

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Must be able to comfortably lift 50lbs
  • Reliable, professional and hard working
  • Pass initial screening process

Activity Summary:

Join us in helping children and youth succeed!

If you enjoy mentoring children and youth in various subjects, and know how to communicate your knowledge of computers and search engines clearly and patiently, please consider volunteering as our Computer Lab Director.

You will be supervising, mentoring, and monitoring children and youth in our Computer Lab as they work on their homework and various research projects.

This position can be flexible. Hours are open to discussion

ESL Teacher for Adults

Activity Summary:

Work together by helping our community members learn English at our Corps. We are looking for an experienced or ESL certified teacher, who is comfortable working with class sizes as large as 15. Responsibilities will include preparing and teaching one-hour classes that will meet weekly over a period of eight weeks. You will write and administer tests and assignments for each unit of study, record attendance, prepare student progress reports, and assist with the development and review program.

The ESL class will run from at your convenience.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Prior experience or certification in teaching preferably ESL
  • Must have a passion for helping
  • Must be able to work well with others
  • Must be able to pass a background check

 Policies:

Volunteers need to be willing to undergo a background check and initial screening process. Once they have passed, they will need to complete our Safe from Harm online training within 90 days of starting.

Alcohol, drugs and smoking are not permitted at any Salvation Army Facilities or volunteer site.

Pants and shirts must cover the waistband. Shirts with print are not to be offensive. Shoes are to be closed toe. We don’t want any injuries done to the toes. Flip flops, shorts, tank tops, undershirts, or halter tops, sleeveless shirts, crop tops, spaghetti straps and strapless tops are not permitted. Transparent, tight or form fitting clothes are not permitted. Skirt/dresses must not be worn more than two inches above the knee.
