  • Administrative Work

    As a Volunteer Administrator you will support the administrative team to  provide a warm and friendly environment for clients coming in to the building and keep accurate records of clients.

    As a volunteer administrator you will:

    • To answer the intercom and let people into the building as appropriate. To notify staff that clients have arrived.
    • To answer the telephone and transfer calls to the appropriate person. To take messages and pass them on to staff. 
    • To prepare old client files for archive.
    • To do other general administrative tasks as required by the administrative team.
    • To ensure you inform the administrative team if you will not be able to come in on your designated days at the earliest possible opportunity.

    Some previous administrative experience would be useful, but not vital.

    You will receive supervision with a member of the staff team will be invited to attend the monthly volunteer meetings.

  • Groupwork

    Your role as a volunteer group facilitator will be to work with an Addaction employee or another volunteer to facilitate groups which support clients on the recovery journey. These may be structured groups where you will deliver workshop style information about alcohol or recovery, or they may be less structured mutual aid groups where you will help group members to share their experiences of recovery to help them maintain their recovery.

    As a volunteer group facilitator you will:

    • Provide a friendly welcoming group setting for clients to attend and work on their recovery.
    • Liaise with a member of Addaction staff or another volunteer to plan which part of the group you will be facilitating and to carry this out at the groups.
    • Keep records of each group and discuss any concerns with the Volunteer Coordinator or other member of Addaction staff.
    • Maintain appropriate boundaries with clients.
    • Be aware of your safeguarding responsibilities and ensure you operate within Addaction’s safeguarding policies.
    • Ensure you inform the Volunteer Coordinator if you will not be able to come in on your designated days at the earliest possible opportunity.

    Some previous experience working with small groups or delivering training or workshops would be an advantage, but not vital.

    Your will have supervision every six weeks with a member of the staff team to discuss your support and development needs and be invited to attend the volunteer team meetings.

     

  • Mentoring

    Your role as a client mentor will be to support clients to achieve goals related to their recovery, whether that be attending meetings and groups whether with Addaction or other organisations or helping them get support with housing or benefits. You will offer them support and encouragement to live independent lives and help them to develop their interests and skills.

    As a volunteer client mentor you will: 

    • Liaise with clients and their key workers to establish what goals they would like to achieve and what support they will need in order to do this.
    • Meet with a client at agreed times and help them to achieve the goals they set.  
    • Maintain appropriate boundaries with the client.
    • Be aware of your safeguarding responsibilities and ensure you operate within Addaction’s safeguarding policies.
    • Ensure you inform the Volunteer Coordinator if you will not be able to come in on your designated days at the earliest possible opportunity.
    • Inform the client or ask the Volunteer Coordinator to contact the client if you will be unable to meet with them at the designated time.

    Some previous experience working with vulnerable groups or as a mentor would be useful, but not vital.

    You will have supervision once a month with a member of the staff team to discuss your support and development needs. You will also be invited to attend the volunteer team meeting.

We want you to have the best possible chance of being accepted at this stage so recommend that when you are filling in the text box in the application form entitled 'Why you wish to volunteer with Addaction' you should consider the person specification below. You do not have to have had extensive experience in the field of substance misuse, but tell us for example what you think about being part of a team, how well do you communicate with others etc, considering as many of the criteria below as this is what we use to shortlist.

    Essential

    Applicants must:

    • Be able to commit to half a days volunteering per week and attend a monthly meeting.
    • Be willing to commit to 6 months volunteering on the scheme
    • Be on time
    • Be able to follow instructions, policies and procedures
    • Have good communication skills and treat others with care and respect
    • Be willing to increase awareness of discrimination in terms of age, class, gender, sexuality, race, religion and health
    • Have some understanding of the issues affecting people with substance misuse issues and their families
    • Be willing to undertake training and learn more about all aspects of substance misuse work
    • Be able to maintain confidentiality and understand the importance of this
    • Be able to work as part of a team
    • Be able to reflect on your own practice and take on board critical feedback
    • Be enthusiastic and motivated

     

    Desirable

    • Personal experience of substance misuse
    • Good IT skills
    • Experience working with or in groups

Addaction: St Helens

  • Administration and Clerical Department

    During this period you will shadow and assist the Administration Department in terms of: Reception Duties, Prescription Printing, Data Entry, Report Generation and various other tasks which allow Addaction not only to arrange a structured package of treatment but also to evidence the interventions provided.

  • Assessment Department

    During this period you will shadow staff that provides one to one Comprehensive Assessments to Service Users wishing to engage with Addaction for a variety of different substances including: Alcohol, Heroin, Cocaine etc. SPOC Staff regularly liaise with our partner agencies, such as: Domestic Violence, Family Support, Social Services etc.

  • Clinical and Prescribing Services

    During this period you will shadow staff currently working in the Clinical setting of Ormskirk Street, St Helens. This will involve direct interventions with Service Users who are in receipt of a Substitute Opiate Prescription and the safeguarding which surrounds this, such as; Drug Testing, Doctor Consultations, Liaising with Chemists, Needle Exchange and much more.

  • Criminal Justice Services

    During this period you will shadow staff that provides both Clinical and Therapeutic Interventions for those involved in the Drug Intervention Programme, DRR and ATR Orders. These Service Users have a legal obligation to attend treatment for their substance misuse, which could significantly impact on their impending sentences.

  • Structured Day Programmes

    During this period you will shadow and take an active role in helping to deliver Structured Group-Work in St Helens Recovery Centre. These groups will consist of MAP, 12-Step, Recovery, Discussion, Music, Arts, Alternative Therapies, Sports and many more. The Breaking The Cycle Project is also ran from this Centre.

  • Volunteer

    Role Title: Volunteer

    Responsible to: Volunteer Co-ordinator or a named supervisor

    Purpose of Role: To undertake specific tasks with a service user as requested by the recovery worker, and to support staff and the delivery of the service as directed.

    Key Tasks and Responsibilities

    • Liaise with clients and their key workers to establish what goals they would like to achieve and what support they will need in order to do this.
    • Meet with a client at agreed times and help them to achieve the goals they set
    • Assisting service users with attendance at appointments at external agencies as requested by key-workers
    • To promote local support services and mutual aid groups to service users
    • To assist service users in completing application forms and making relevant phone calls
    • Helping the service user to consider ways of positively filling his/her time
    • To encourage self-help, confidence and development of self esteem
    • To complete written records of any client activity undertaken as directed
    • Encourage realistic goal setting
    • To shadow project workers in their various roles (may include group work)
    • To assertively re-engage clients who are at risk of dropping out of treatment

    Organisational Responsibilities

    • Maintain principles of confidentiality
    • Take responsibility for setting and maintaining professional boundaries with clients.
    • Be aware of your safeguarding responsibilities and ensure you operate within The Recovery Partnership’s safeguarding policies.
    • Adhere to all relevant policies and procedures and guidelines including Health and Safety and Diversity and Equality
    • Attend and participate in training and supervision

     

    Team Support

    • Compile information on local resources as directed
    • Accompany staff on home visits and other outreach
    • Assist with open days and other community events
    • Support and assist Recovery Champions in their role
    • To ensure relevant information is displayed in client areas and kept up to date
    • To assist the team with administrative tasks such as photocopying & filing
    • To share useful information on resources and local services with the team
    • Where necessary training and supervision has been given, to provide team cover for specified client appointments, assessments or other duties

    Volunteering for The Recovery Partnership is not ALL about client work or 1-2-1 working, but rather making the project itself function on a day to day basis to deliver the best possible service to clients and volunteers work alongside paid staff in order to accomplish this.

The Recovery Partnership is a new integrated and recovery-focused treatment service for residents across Coventry and Warwickshire with a drug or alcohol problem.

The Recovery Partnership is provided by Addaction and Cranstoun, two national substance misuse charities who between them operate over 100 specialist services.

We have TRP services in Coventry, Rugby, Leamington Spa, Nuneaton and Stratford-Upon-Avon.
